Day 25 of #backbendmadness2014 w/ @kinoyoga @fitqueenirene @beachyogagirl - #hanumanasana
I’ve been feeling extremely thankful for my body recently. I spent such a huge chunk of my life picking at myself for all of my perceived flaws- gobble neck, thunder thighs, miles of stretch marks, chubby belly, etc. I mean, there’s got to be a ‘fuck it’ point. Essentially, I had to realize- what if I spend my whole life trying to lose weight and I still have all of my ‘flaws’? Y’all, I have no fucking intention of wasting away my 20s in pursuit of half baked ideas about what my body ‘should’ look like- why bother when this is what it DOES look like?

As much as I have been loving being able to do yoga outside in the middle of winter, I would love it more if it rained.

"A Fat Girl Dancing: Talk Dirty to Me (Jason Derulo)"
You all need to watch this video that’s been making rounds on YouTube and Facebook.

Here you have Whitney— she’s talented, she’s confident, she’s gorgeous, she’s killin these moves, and yes, she’s fat.

I love that she calls her videos “A Fat Girl Dancing” because a lot of times people have a hard time associating fat with anything positive. Instead the word is attached to a myriad of negative adjectives and an endless list of “nots”: “Fat people are lazy,” “Fat girls can’t wear that,” “Fat people shouldn’t go to clubs,” etc. Even when getting compliments, fat and “good” don’t go together: “You can move for a fat girl”, “You’re not fat, you’re cute”, and (flashback to yesterday’s post) “You’re so pretty for a big girl.” But yes, you CAN be fat AND beautiful, fat AND outgoing, fat AND a traveler, and fat AND a dancer!

Rant over.
I’m positive we’ll be seeing a lot more from this great young woman.

ASDAH: HAES® Principles

fucknohealthism:

ASDAH has revised the HAES(r) Principles. I think they have done a great job addressing some of the previous problems with intersectionality and social justice issues:

The Health At Every Size® Principles are:

  1. Weight Inclusivity: Accept and respect the inherent diversity of body shapes and sizes and reject the idealizing or pathologizing of specific weights.
  2. Health Enhancement: Support health policies that improve and equalize access to information and services, and personal practices that improve human well-being, including attention to individual physical, economic, social, spiritual, emotional, and other needs.
  3. Respectful Care: Acknowledge our biases, and work to end weight discrimination, weight stigma, and weight bias. Provide information and services from an understanding that socio-economic status, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and other identities impact weight stigma, and support environments that address these inequities.
  4. Eating for Well-being: Promote flexible, individualized eating based on hunger, satiety, nutritional needs, and pleasure, rather than any externally regulated eating plan focused on weight control.
  5. Life-Enhancing Movement: Support physical activities that allow people of all sizes, abilities, and interests to engage in enjoyable movement, to the degree that they choose.

Ditch the Fear of Jiggles and Just Giggle!!!

I often talk about being a big dancer and how I’ve overcome obstacles…but today I want to take a more positive and celebratory route…join me in the passenger seat won’t you?!

I have been modeling for this AMAZING photographer, Nina Méndez Martí, for her project on dance as a form of insanity, joy, exhaustion, all sorts of emotions! Working with her I knew that I had to let go of all my inhibitions, my fears, my concerns, EVERYTHING. So there I was in her studio, dancing in a leotard, on a bed with all my glorious jiggle spots dancing with me…and for a moment….I didn’t feel self conscience or uncomfortable….for a moment…. I felt so….. FREE! I was having so much fun and embraced my leotard riding up and falling down. I let go because this wasn’t about me, it was about the moment! And as soon as you let go of the worries, you begin to realize, “Shit, I’m having a blast!!!”

In a time where we use Instagram, blogs and Facebook to record our everyday adventures, we get caught up in the “omg my arm looks fat here” or “ugh my face is a mess, delete!” we forget about the actual moment. So what your face looks a hot ass mess…it’s because at that moment you were getting low, having fun and didn’t care about posing for the camera phone. So I say post that picture where you think “omg my ass looks flat/huge/weird/etc…” and instead say “omg jumping on the bed for this shoot reminded me of jumping around with my sister when we were young! So fun!”

Dance It Out!

Jessie

Januaryogis Challenge by SunandStrength Day 15 Half Moon Day 16 Grasshopper Pose
For grasshopper pose I tried to do baby grasshopper, but could not grab my foot. This is a cool pose but won’t get into it anytime soon. Got to keep practicing my crow pose balancing to build up more arm strength.
