Niro’s work consists of a connecting series of photographs that should be read together as a whole narrative. The images are set in a pastoral landscape, and each subsequent photograph offers an increasingly incisive statement on the colonization of the land that once belonged to aboriginal peoples.
Shelly Niro was born in Niagara Falls, NY in 1954. She is a member of the Mohawk Nation, Iroquois Confederacy, Turtle Clan, Six Nations Reserve. She is currently based in Brantford, Ontario, and works in a variety of media, including beadwork, painting, photography, and film.

This is an amalgamation of two things: my need to see body diversity in art, and my recently discovered love for poster making. I never understood why ‘thunder thighs’ was an insult. It sounds powerful to me. Reminiscent of an almighty, unstoppable ruckus in the clouds, a veritable fucking rock show of giants, Bikini Kill on amps the size of mountains.

2. WE are angry at mistreatment by commercial and sexist interests. These have exploited our bodies as objects of ridicule, thereby creating an immensely profitable market selling the false promise of aviodance of, or relief from, that ridicule.
